REFLECTIONS :
Experience -
I felt like this semester ended in a blink of an eye. The first class for this module felt like yesterday and suddenly I'm writing my final reflection. This module was quite challenging and interesting at the same time. Task 1 was still manageable but the work load got heavier starting from task 2. My favourite task from this module would definetly be Task 2 and 3(a) where we were generating and designing our own book. I enjoyed watching my own storybook come to life! I'm not gonna lie, this semester was not all rainbows and sunshines. I've had my fair shares of ups and downs too (cried and stressed mainly). Not to mention, I caught covid while nearing the end of the semester which sucks. Thankfully, it was already almost the end and I was just finalising everything for this module. So I'm glad that I still got to complete everything in time and submitted them successfully. Through 14 weeks of this module, I learnt that the tasks where we had to do layouts were my weakest. It took me some time to get used to concept and to create something that is consistent yet smooth. Mad respect to people who design brand guidelines and books for a living!
Observations -
I observe that with proper time management and high discipline, we can complete our work in time no matter what. As many of my lecturers mention, this semester will be one of the most hectic ones with all the heavy modules together. I have seen some of my classmates struggling to complete the tasks due to lack of time. However, by manaaging my time better and stop procrastinating, I always manage to complete my tasks before the day we had class. Another thing that I observe about myself is that I’m slowly starting to be more acceptable of opinions and constructive criticism without getting butthurt. I used to get (a little) upset and question my own ability but now I have come to FULLY accept that everyone has different aesthetic preferences so sometimes the things you design may not be the ‘cup of tea’ to others. Lastly, this is something I found in Brand Corporate Identity but I think it applies here as well. Since I have my own prefered aesthetic, I tend to always lean more to it (unconciously) and always design based on my aesthetic. I will have to work on which is my creative literacy and I can do so by exposing myself to a variety of designs.
Findings -
I understood the importance of layout better through this module. A good layout has to have flow and is consistent throughout. Most importantly, a layout needs to have variations. By having variations it can be exciting to look at and every page may be a surprise to the readers. Variations can add value to the readers without overshadowing the message. I also learnt that playing around with graphical elements may give the design more dynamics.
