TOKYO TRIP REFLECTION:

This year, our batch was lucky enough to be able to travel to Tokyo for our data collection. Overall I really enjoyed the experience as it made me learn and gain knowledge on my group's chosen topic (wagashi). It was very interesting to see different types of wagashi in person and learning the meaning behind each confectionery. From this trip, I understood that colours play a huge role in wagashi as they act as a 'tool' to represent the different seasons in Japan. For example, from Aono (a shop we visited) I got to learn that they actually used lighter pink for the wagashi as it is not fully spring yet. Some stores also made their wagashi mimick the transition period from winter to spring which was so cool (but not yummy). I also noticed there were many modern adaptations of traditional wagashi especially in touristy locations like Sensoji Temple to appeal to the younger target audience as well as tourists.

Some of the different wagashis we tried

It was surprising to taste the wagashi as some of them really tasted differently from how they look. One confection in particular, Sakura Mochi always looked so good in anime or illsutrations but they tasted so bad in real life. To quote my groupmates, they said it tasted like 'old people'. Other than eating, we also walked alot. I think we were mostly on foot (besides being on the train) but I would never forget walking around in Akasaka for our research because it was one hell of an experience while walking there. Apparently it's considered a 'rich man's land' and there were many embassy, shrines, mansions and HILLS. I would say 99% of our walk in Akasaka consists of walking up or downhill.

Moving on, we also got to visit different exhibitions and museums. My favourite was surely Team Labs Planets Tokyo as it was really refreshing to see such a unique and immersive museum. It was fascinating to learn the concept and thought behind the different artworks. I love how the museum seperates into 2 area (water & garden). My favourite artwork from the water area would definitely be koi fishes swimming on water. The koi fishes are projected onto water while visitors can walk around freely in the water. Another thing that was special in this museum was that visitors can actually download their app to guide them and allow them to read the concept of the artworks. Besides, visitors using the app can take part and create an artwork in the 'Infinite Crystal Universe'.

Lastly, this trip also made me gain many new friends along the way. I got closer to the people who were staying in the same unit as me in W-Inn Asakusa, people who were sitting beside me on the plane as well as my own groupmates. From talking to our project to sharing about ourselves and talking to each other about what we did on a daily basis in the hotel while at Tokyo. I'm lucky and glad that my group members were cooperative throughout the whole trip and gave a helping hand whenever I needed it. This trip will be in the highlights of my 2023 and will remain as one of the best ones too! All in all, I'm grateful and relieved that this trip was smooth sailing from the beginning till the end and I want to thank Mr Asrizal and Ms Anis for their guidance.
