Assignment 1: Proposal

Week 02 - 08/04/2022
Lecturer Feedback: Overall research topic and rationale are good to go with just a few adjustments to be made. For my rationale, Ms Jinchi mentioned choosing findings or research papers from more recent years (5 years max). She mentioned adding citations for one of the sentences and also asked me to rephrase the last sentence of my rationale. Other than that, she also asked me to tweak my research topic, to be more specific and find out which part of graphic design I will be researching about. 

Week 03 - 14/04/2022
Lecturer Feedback: Ms Jinchi advised me to add typography into my research as colour as a topic itself is too limited to explore. For my problem statement, I was advised to include some visual imagery as examples and also add another paragraph introducing typography since I’m expanding my topic. I also have to look into some other brands that have a good range of colour and typography for me to research as the brands I mentioned, Innisfree and Laneige have a more minimalist approach which might not be suitable for my topic. I must also make sure the product images have to be easily accessible too. Also a good try to use journal articles.

Assignment 2: Critical Review
Week 05 - 29/04/2022
Lecturer Feedback:
The 5 articles I searched for my critical review were accepted. Overall, my critical review had no issues but Ms Jinchi advised me to add some more comments on a few of the areas of the articles. She also thought of wats I could comment on the articles and taught me how to reword/ restructure my sentences. Ms Jinchi also suggested and thought of ways how I could merge my critical reviews together.  

Week 07 - 12/05/2022
Lecturer Feedback:
I was advised to rephrase a few of my sentences to add more critique on some areas as I didn't clearly explain why I think some of the articles/papers are excellent. All in all, a few changes are to be made then it can be submitted.

Assignment 3: Research Implementation (Primary data)
Week 09 - 26/05/2022
Lecturer Feedback:
Replacement class on 23/05/2022 
I was advised to include reliable sources (articles or journals) to back up and justify my claims. Such as why certain survey questions have been asked, etc. Ms Jinchi also advised me to rephrase some of the questions in my survey, and use lesser design technical terms as some of the target audience might not understand design terms.

Week 10 - 02/06/2022
Lecturer Feedback:
Well prepared but some of my questions need to be rephrased and it's good to go. Besides that, add another section where I justify why I chose the candy packaging. Ms Jinchi also mentioned that I do not have to worry about the brand as my main focus is still on candy packaging design.

Week 11 - 09/06/2022
Lecturer Feedback:
No feedback, the lecturer was feeling under the weather.

Week 12 - 16/06/2022
Lecturer Feedback:
Ms Jinchi advised me to retake my visual analysis images during the semester break. She also advised buying the candy so I can continue using it for my Design Research Dissertation module. Other than that, I was told to make a few amendments to my data and also visual analysis. 

Assignment 4: Research Reflection Report & Presentation 
Week 13 - 23/06/2022
Lecturer Feedback:
The colour scheme is soothing and non-distracting, and the hierarchy of information and shapes/visual elements in place does not relate to the research topic. Add in conclusion and references in the table of contents. Add in a header to show which is summary and strength in key literature. For data analysis, I need to specify how many days was the survey open and the total of respondents gathered. I can also mention that I took pictures of the selected product packaging on the spot (in-store). We can use bold or make the font size bigger to highlight the keywords. Add in limitations to my study as well (constraints).

Remember to add in justifications for research methods, other that than not many changes are needed.

REFLECTIONS  

Experience

Prior to this, I have never taken any modules that are related to research so it was definitely a struggle in the beginning. I have also never written anything that requires the APA style citation so that also took me some time to get used to. I am very grateful as sufficient and helpful resources were provided for us to get a better understanding of each task and this module itself. Moreover, this module was a great opportunity for us to explore our own specialisations or interests further. Now, I have a deeper understanding of the roles of colours and typography in packaging design and how effective are colours and typography when used in packaging design. I will keep the knowledge and information I gathered in this module in mind and it will definitely be useful to me in the future. The tasks for this module were acceptable to me since I do not think that I struggle much with understanding the requirements for each of the tasks. I also liked how this module gave us the freedom to explore and research topics that are based on our field of expertise or interests. I also appreciate the constructive feedback that was given to us by Ms Jinchi as it definitely helped improve the quality of our research. All in all, I had a good experience throughout this module. Though things were quite difficult at times (burnt-out moments), I still managed to cope and push through the entire semester.


Observations 

I observed that the one thing that I struggle with the most for this module is definitely time management. Since I had a lot on my plate, it was tiring trying to keep us with everything. Halfway through the module, I was not in very good head space and felt burnt out. Besides, self-discipline is also very important as I kept getting distracted while doing the critical review. Mainly because each article is so long and requires much concentration. After observing this issue about myself, I trained myself to be self-disciplined. No matter how difficult it gets, I told myself I have to continue in order to reach the goal that I was aiming for. Besides that, I also observed that it is important to read up on books or journal articles or posts regarding the area of interest and research topic since it can greatly benefit us when working on our tasks.


Findings 
I found that there are a few aspects to consider when writing a research paper. This module really opened my eyes to what writing a research paper feels like. I knew it was not going to be easy as it takes more than just collecting data to complete one research paper. Much thoughts, consideration and dedication have to be poured into this in order for the research to have a desirable outcome. Secondly, proper time management is also another valuable takeaway from this module or semester in general. I struggled halfway through since a few of the subjects I took this semester had heavy workloads. Learning from my mistakes, I began to allocate and manage my time properly by using a planner to track my progress. This was a lifesaver since it allowed me to successfully complete everything by the given deadline.
